The Department of Pharmacognosy is concerned with impartation of knowledge to students on the subject of Pharmacognosy. This deals mainly with the description, identification (both in the whole and powdered state), collection, preparation, storage, quality control, chemistry and pharmacological uses of medicinal plants. It also involves separation of plant constituents by the use of various chromatographic procedures (HPLC, HPTLC, Densitometry, Gel Filtration, Ion Exchange, Electrophoresis, etc.) leading to the isolation of pure bioactive compounds.
There are presently three Professors in the Department, three Senior Lecturers, one Lecturer 1, two Lecturer II and one Junior Trainee Fellow.
